In an entertaining and competitive game last night, Coopersville wrapped up its regular season with a win over a tough physical Hamilton squad. The Broncos spotted Hamilton a 17-4 lead following a pregame technical foul and some hot shooting by the Hawkeyes who made 4 of 6 3 pointers. The Broncos recovered and behind Riley Johnson and Connor Helsen, made their way back into the game by scoring the last 6 points of the first quarter. The second quarter found many Broncos on the bench with foul trouble and the Hawkeyes took advantage. splashing 3 more 3 pointers and making a bunch of FT to increase their lead to 8 at halftime. The Broncos utilized their deep bench to hang around with Nate Castenholz, Jack DeVries and Colin Worpel all contributing big minutes during the 2nd quarter. In the second half, Coopersville began to assert themselves defensively, limiting the Hawkeyes to one shot on many possessions. Connor Hilton led the comeback by making 2 3 pointers and a layup in the 3rd quarter. Colin Worpel also had 4 big points in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Coopersville quickly expanded their lead, turning the Hawkeyes over many times which led to multiple fast breaks and easy buckets. Coopersville also shot free throws very well down the stretch to hold off any Hamilton comeback attempt.
The Broncos were led by senior captain Riley Johnson with 16 points and multiple other winning plays, Nolan Frye overcame foul trouble to score 11, Connor Hilton scored 10, Connor Helsen had 10 all in the first half. Chase VanKempen scored 9 with 6 steals and 4 rebounds after being on the bench much of the first half with foul trouble.. Colin Worpel had a career high with 6 and senior Gerrit Buth added 3.
The Broncos end the regular season at 14-6. They begin district play next Monday at West Catholic vs Comstock Park at 7:30 pm.
